NYPAN

Roundtable Discussant, Political Education

NYPAN, the New York Progressive Action Network, was founded in December of 2016, following the 2016 elections. The founding chapters were all grassroots organizations that had formed during the Bernie Sanders campaign in New York. Volunteers in these organizations, many of them entirely new to politics, became heavily involved in their communities, built networks, and made lasting friendships.

The Movement

At the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, representatives from these grassroots organizations met up and decided that, even though the primary was over, the movement was too important to abandon. NYPAN became a vehicle for sustained political engagement and progressive action in New York State.

Our Role

In March 2023, I participated as a panelist for the New York State Progressive Action Network's "The Big Payback Screening." Over 100 participants were present for the screening and panelist discussion, engaging in critical conversations about reparations and racial justice.

The screening featured critical questions that guided the panelist discussion. Watch the full screening and discussion here.

  • What ARE reparations?
  • Why should we do reparations?
  • Why are reparations important to YOU?
  • What form can reparations take?
  • What are the things people say are difficult about doing this?

The Impact

By bringing together over 100 participants for critical conversations about reparations and racial justice, the screening and panelist discussion created space for political education and community engagement. These conversations are essential to building a movement that centers racial justice and equity in all aspects of progressive politics.

"The movement was too important to abandon. Progressive politics must be rooted in racial justice and reparations."
